VMS performance on Progress Version 7

This kbase is being created to assist customers that are experiencing
issues regarding performance issues after upgrading from Progress
Version 6 to Version 7.

Recently technical support has received several service calls
regarding poor performance in Version 7 verses the performance
originally obtained in Version 6 of Progress. The reason for this is
that changes need to be made to your system UAF file. We have found
that settings in the UAF file are adequate, however for optimal
performance we recommend changing the following settings:

WSdef
WSquo
WSextent
Pgflquo

As these are VMS parameters, we cannot tell you the best setting
for your machine. We do however, recommend that you try increasing
these settings. Information regarding these settings can be obtained
in your VMS System Management documentation for System Performance
Tuning.

When making changed to these parameters, be aware that WSextent is
bounded by the size of the SYSGEN parameter WSMAX. Also SYSGEN may
be dictating automatic working set trimming - which can also hurt
performance.

Please also note, that when making changes to these parameters, you
will need to log out and then login again to have these new settings
take affect. As values in the UAF file are determined at login and
set throughout the life of the process.

Some sample settings we have at Progress are:

WSdef: 1024
WSquo: 8192
WSextent: 131072
Pgflquo: 500000

But again, please keep in mind, that the best setting for these
parameters depends on what you are doing on your system and what
you are trying to accomplish. If you experience trouble or wish
additional information on these settings, please consult your
VMS documentation or your Operating System vendor as Progress cannot
make these recommendations. You can use the VMS MONITOR utility to
monitor performance with new parameters.
