What features are in 8.1 Character-Mode limited shipping.
This release will be a limited commercial shipment and tested only to
the level of supporting existing v6 code.
- We will not disable the V8 features in the product, but we won't
support them either.
- This release will run in command shells on
- NT version 3.51 and 4.0
- WIn95
- This will be a 32-bit implementation
- Networking is Tcp/ip and Netbios
- Customer will be able to Probuild in GUI mode to generate TTY
executable. (needed to support inclusion of Thai sorting procedures)
- The following types of database access is supported:
- Client access via network to V7 or V8 database server
- Self service client access to a local 8.1 database server
running on NT or WIn95
- Single-user (-1) access to a local database (on NT or WIN95)

- This product will not run under plain Dos or in a Dos Window under s
Windows 3.X
- No 16 bit version
- No support for 4gl syntax introduced in V7 or V8. Only v6 syntax
- No Character mode tools (except Procedure Editor and App. Compiler.
- No Data Dictionary/admin tool
- No TTY results
- No 32 bit features such as long filenames
- This product will not use the registry and will still use the INI.
- No double byte support
- No Progress debugger
- 32 bit client will not run as a service.
- No support for data servers
- No support for V6frame.
- No support for ESQL
- No support for HLC
- Help support same as Unix 8.1- we have discontinued support for
character-mode help.
- No smart object support
- Limited testing on International versions of NT/WIN95
- No invocation of dll's from 4gl code.
- UIB users will not be able to run the character-mode app from the
UIB
