GOAL:
Will Progress work using a VPN for client server access
FACT(s) (Environment):
Windows
OpenEdge 10.x
Progress 9.x
FIX:
Setup of VPN networks is outside the scope of Progress Technical Support. Progress does not test or recommend any particular VPN device.
There is no issue with Progress using the Virtual Private Network protocol. As long as the basic TCP protocol functions between VPN client and VPN server, Progress will work without problems. Telnet and ping from the server to the client and vice-versa need to work Compared to a LAN, there might be firewalls involved for VCP connections; using -minport and -maxport would then be necessary.
There are several different products on the market for VPN implementation, and they can vary in the type: software or hardware products. Software VPNs result in all traffic being encrypted on the network. Hardware VPNs are typically concentrators or routers that result in the data being in clear-text between the system and the hardware device.
However, bear in mind that performance may be affected due to the encryption/decryption algorithm performed by the VPN device. Moreover, VPNs also have configuration limitations and are not suitable for all environments.
There's a wealth of VPN information on the Web that will provide more detailed information.
