Kbase P9820: Domain administrator can't shut down the database

FACT(s) (Environment):

Windows NT 32 Intel/Windows 2000

SYMPTOM(s):

Domain administrator can't shut down the database.

Error 541 Invalid shutdown request from (user-id) on console

CAUSE:

Error 541 indicates the user does not have the authority to shut down the database. The user would need to have local administrative rights to stop the database.

Even a user who is part of a domain admin login account, who by default, belongs to the local administrator's group, does not inherit all of the rights and privileges of the local administrator.

A Progress database started by ProControl (ProService under the default System account) running on Windows 2000 or Windows NT may not be stopped at the command prompt using PROSHUT unless the user has local administrative rights.

FIX:

The workaround is to create a local user account with the same name and
password as the domain login account. Add this new user to the local administrator's group. This will allow the user to stop any database started by ProService.
