GOAL:
Is it possible, on Linux, to get input from the keyboard and a serial device (such as a barcode reader) at the same time
FACT(s) (Environment):
Linux Intel
FIX:
Not directly from the 4GL.
We are aware of a utility named linbar which reads from the specified serial device and puts any characters to the keyboard buffer of a Linux console.
You can find linbar at http://www.cs-net.gr/linbar/.
Please be aware that Progress Software does not recommend nor endorse linbar in any way. Please test your application thorougly in development before putting linbar in production. Even then, if your application is experiencing problems using linbar, you will be asked to remove linbar from your configuration first, and check whether the problems still occurs; if the problem goes away when linbar is removed, we will not be able to give any further support.
