Status: Unverified
SYMPTOM(s):
Database crashes.
SYSTEM ERROR: wrong dbkey in block. Found <dbkey1>, should be <dbkey2> (1124)
1124, Corrupt DBKEY, and Seagate Drives
write cache enabled on disk drives
CAUSE:
The 1124 errors stem from the disk write cache, which is enable by default on these drives. The 1124 errors have occurred both in the write cache memory only (rebooting the machine has corrected the current errors) and have also been written to disk (dbrpr or restoring from backup to correct corrupted blocks). However, as long as the write cache is enabled the corruption and 1124 errors may return.
In all cases so far, disabling write cache has eliminated the re-occurrance of 1124 errors to databases on these drives.
FIX:
Disable write cache on the harddrive Drive.
Disabling write caching is NOT done at the Operating System level and O/S testing usually shows no errors. Disabling usually includes jumpers on the drive itself or a firmware change to the drive. This cannot usually be done by the user or even System Administrator.
Progress does not support the use of write cache.
