Statement to Programmers on New Releases of ADM code
This knowledgebase is meant to state to ADM programmers what they
can expect as new versions of ADM code are released. This statement
applies to major version updates of PROGRESS, for example, a
release of 8.1A that follows upon 8.0A02. Maintenance releases (for
example, 8.0A04 following 8.0A02) and releases within the same
version number (as when 8.0B follows 8.0A) are not affected.
With new version releases of PROGRESS, ADM programmers can expect
that there will be changes to the source code that comprises
the ADM. Changes which add significant functionality or improve
performance can be expected to be substantial. (In some
cases, customers who have written code to work around an ADM
bug will be able to remove the changes due to the bug being
fixed.)
Because all of the ADM code is visible to programmers, any
changes to the ADM will have potential effects. As a result it
should be expected that some changes to user application code
and user support libraries will also be necessary.
Progress is committed to providing programmers with complete
documentation describing changes to the ADM that arise in
new releases. Programmers will be able to analyze how
these changes affect their customizations and modify their
programs accordingly. Progress Technical Support will assist
in communicating these ADM changes to the degree possible,
but will be constrained where extensive user customizations
are involved. Programmers are therefore encouraged to thoroughly
document any changes they make to ADM code, in the knowledge
that there will almost certainly be a future requirement for
them to modify that custom ADM code again on their own as new
ADM releases arise.
Programmers are also strongly urged to study all ADM
documentation that accompanies a new PROGRESS release before
proceeding with ADM development on the new version.
