GOAL:
What is a DataServer Schema Holder?
FACT(s) (Environment):
Progress/OpenEdge Versions
DataServers
Windows
UNIX
FIX:
A schema holder is an empty Progress/OpenEdge database with limited Data Dictionary functions. A schema holder contains schema definitions or schema images for one or more heterogeneous foreign data sources. Progress/OpenEdge supports many foreign data source such as Oracle, MS SQL Server, ODBC complaiant foreign database such as DB2/400, Access, Sybase, etc...
The schema holder contains no user or application data. The schema holder maps to a foreign data source's data definitions with some additions to provide PROGRESS 4GL functionality. The Progress/OpenEdge client accesses the schema holder at the beginning of a runtime session, caches all information back to the client and compiles the source code.
