Does Progress' online backup work with Windows NT ?
You can *NOT* use a tape backup device with Progress` "online" backup
option directly in Windows NT 3.51 simply because Windows NT 3.51 can
*NOT* define a tape device as a "logical" device.
PROBKUP can only write to a "logical" device (hard drive, optical
disk, file, etc...); not a sequential access device such as a tape
drive. A tape drive will ONLY work on a UNIX system because UNIX can
define a tape drive as a logical device when it does a TAR dump.
You can use the "online" option if your backup utility has a
scheduling utility that will allow you to run a batch job (.BAT file).
You would back up your NT database using Progress' "online" backup
option (via this batch file) to another FILE elsewhere on your system,
then have your tape backup utility pick up the new copy of the
database, thus avoiding the attempt to read the actual DB that is
running in multi-user mode.
