GOAL:

Is it possible to roll forward ais against an initial backup if a second backup is done?

FIX:

It is possible to continue rolling forward ais against a previous backup, even if a second backup is made of the original database. For example, if a backup tape takes several days to reach a site, it is possible to ftp the ai files since the second backup and roll forward these ai files against the first restored backup. Progress does not support this however. The ai files should be rolled forward against the latest restored backup only.
As per the Database Administration Guide and Reference, Chapter 6.1,:
After-image (AI) files contain information required to reconstruct a database if a database disk is lost or damaged. You roll forward these files to reprocess all transactions that occurred since the last backup.
