Progress-IBM collaborative benchmark on the web
Progress and IBM collaborated on a joint benchmark and the results
have been posted on the web. The IBM vendor brief is at http://www.developer.ibm.com/spc/vbrief/vprog.html
In addition to the information found on these web pages, it can be
disclosed that:
1)Progress' purpose was two-fold, ensure that current Progress
product worked on the new PowerPC 604 cpu, and to come away with a
general inpression of performance in comparison to our inhouse IBM
J30 on which we benchmarked in preparation for the Boston User
Conference performance presentation. The "current" Progress product
used at the IBM center was 8.0B2B.
2)Progress is not aware of any tuning of the AIX kernel; an out of
the box install to support the new IBM SSA disk system. It consisted
of approximately 32GB of available disk space, 8 604 cpu's and 2GB of
ram.
3)From a Progress perspective:
-B 250000
-spin 2000 (for 8 users, max of 20000 for 48 users)
-bibufs 16
-directio (existing option now applicable to IBM SSA disk systems)
4 APWs
1 BIW
The database was approximately 800MB, roughly 32 extents across
9 disks. The bi cluster size was 4096, and a bi block size of 16.
There was one fixed bi extend, and one variable.
Remember, the standard disclaimer, your milage may vary.
