TCP/IP clients hang on SCO UNIX & Compac SystemPro

910909-JAO01
On Compaq SystemPro's running SCO Unix, the network card will
appear to hang when trying to connect several TCP/IP clients
(either Unix or DOS clients). The machine can not be pinged
from other machines, this can only appear to be remedied by
shutting down the Progress Server.

At this point a SCO utility called "crash" should be run, you
must be logged in as super user (su) to run this. Once this
is running, choose the strstat option. This will display
statistics related to the configured streams parameters in
the kernel. We have found that the 128k Buffers setting and
the 256k buffers (for streams) had errors reported in the
streams section of the report generated. To relieve these
errors double the kernel settings for both parameters. The
same approach can be taken if errors are reported related to
other streams parameters.

This is the solution to the problem encountered at the Sara
Lee/PC Week Database Shootout. At this point in time,
this appears specific to SCO on Compaq SystemPro's. On other
operating systems and platforms where this occurs, streams
settings should also be pursued.
