GOAL:
What product allows customers to create non-Progress frontend applications that can access Progress AppServer?
FACT(s) (Environment):
Progress 9.x
FIX:
Version 9 (V9) Open AppServer Features
The Progress AppServer in V9 allows customers to create non-Progress front end applications that can access Progress 4GL-based business logic on an AppServer. That same business logic can be accessed by Progress character or GUI clients and WebSpeed HTML applications as well The Open Client capability in Version 9 is one of several new 'open' features in this release.
* OPEN CLIENT TOOLKIT:
A new development tool that can be used to expose 4GL-based business logic on an AppServer to open clients. Java clients and ActiveX clients are the two types of Open Clients supported in Version 9.
These clients, such as programs written in Java, Visual Basic and C++, can access AppServer functionality via the Java classes or ActiveX Automation objects generated by the Proxy Generator, a component of the Open Client Toolkit.
* PROXY GENERATOR:
This proxy code provides the interface that allows a Java or ActiveX application to call the methods of and pass parameters to these Java classes and ActiveX Automation objects.
* OPEN CLIENT RUNTIME:
These runtime files are placed on the Open Client and are used in conjunction with the proxies created by ProxyGen to access AppServer functionality.
The Open Client Toolkit will be included with Progress Provision Plus product and will also be available separately.
