GOAL:
Where should the Schema Holder reside when working with Progress/400 with multiple clients?
FACT(s) (Environment):
PROGRESS/400
FIX:
The PROGRESS/400 Schema holder can be created on every client machine or in a network environment. There are pros and cons for each configuration.
If each client has a schema holder than only that client's work will be recorded in their server's job log on the AS/400. This makes trouble shooting much easier in the event of a problem. The downside of this is that you will need to update each schema holder to reflect the current schema definitions. This increases the amount of maintenance that will need to be done.
If using a network environment, the schema holder will reside on the network file server. In this event, each client will connect to the schema holder on the network server. The maintenance is much easier because you only have to update the one schema holder but the server log file will contain each clients entry's, thus making it more difficult to trouble shoot the problem.
