V8 and Character mode
V8 and character mode:
----------------------
You should be aware of some problems when upgrading from V7 to V8
under windows or trying to develop an application for character mode
with progres V8.
1- V8 for PC-Windows is a pure windows application. That means: there
is NO MORE progress DOS character executable (_PROGRES.EXE)
provided in this version. The last progress character version for
DOS is 7.3B. Thus, if you really need to run in character mode
under DOS, you can not use V8.
2- Currently, from V8.0A to V8.0A03 the bat file bpro.bat (and some
others) are still provided but should be removed or modified.
Those bat files call _PROGRES.EXE and thus will not run in V8
(This has been entered as a Bug).
3- You still have the ability to develop in V8 and use an alternate
layout to change your application for character mode. But, as
SmartObjects are currently not supported in character mode, you
can not use the Alternate Layout function for any application
developped with SmartObjects. There is a clearly documented note
on page 6-1 of the UIB Developers Guide stating Multiple Layouts
are not available for SmartObjects or SmartContainers. So you
should not develop an application with SmartObjects if you plan to
deploy to any character mode platforms yet.
