FACT(s) (Environment):

HP-UX 11.0

FACT(s) (Environment):

Progress 8.3B

SYMPTOM(s):

System practically comes to a halt when the 20th user logs onto database.

Poor performance since making hardware changes

Changed internal drives from Raid 10 to Raid 5.

Database is not located on Raid 5 drive.

Raid 5 was installed on root system directory /.

Reading from or writing to the database are slow.

QAD application slow even when switching menus.

Added a Clarion fiber channel disk array

Databases and application located on HP Disk Array

CAUSE:

Bottleneck is the SCSI gateway between the disk arrays. Hardware vendor mirrored the contents of the HP disk array to the Clarion disks. All Progress DB activity was being reproduced on the new disk array at the moment any activity occurred on the HP disk array.

FIX:

Reconfiguring the hardware to avoid mirroring. DB files will reside in one location and the disk array will handle the redundancy in its own Raid 10 manner.
