Do you have an ODBC problem ? Top ten questions to ask
INTRODUCTION:

This Technical Support KBase entry provides questions which should
help you to ask when customer is reporting an ODBC problem. Answers
will be valuable for TSE who will have to solve the problem. This
entry is not a troubleshooting.
WHEN YOU COULD NEED IT:
=======================
Whenever you have customer reporting an ODBC problem and you do not
have a strong command of ODBC.
HOW TO USE IT:
==============
It is not always necessary to ask all the questions but it is
recomended to get as much valuable information as possible.
QUESTIONS TO ASK:
=================
Some general questions:
* What is the Progress ODBC driver/server version ?
* What is the data source type and what version ?
* What type of configuration do you use (refer to Progress ODBC driver
guide chapter 2.3 Specifying a Data Source for Your Configuration) ?
* What is the driver configuration (ODBC Admin) ?
* What is the broker configuration (ODBC Admin) ?
* Where dou you connect from, what is the client software and its
version (eg. MS-Access 2.0, 4GL 7.3B) ?
* What error do you get (messages from your screen, db_name.lg,
prooidrv.lg - in your current directory) ?
* Does the connection work with Progress ODBC QuickTest ?
* Do you have PROGRESS.INI in your WINDOWS directory ?
* Do you have \DLC\BIN directory in your PATH ?
* Has Progress been installed on local drive or copied from the server
(if so has files from \DLC\WINFILES been copied to \WINDOWS\SYSTEM
directory) ?
* Did you try to use Progress demo files in \DLC\ODBC directory
(in case that MS-Access or DBase source is required) ?
In case the connection is remote:
* What is the Progress database server version ?
* What are the startup parameters for the server ?
* What protocol do you use ?
* What networking software do you use and its version ?
* Is the network connection OK (does it work when ODBC is not used) ?
