GOAL:

Should I recompile my application after upgrading to a newer version of Progress?

GOAL:

Is it necessary to recompile the application after installing a new version of Progress?

FACT(s) (Environment):

All Supported Operating Systems
Progress 9.x
OpenEdge 10.x

FIX:

Progress always recommends recompiling your application after installing a newer version or applying a new Service Pack.
Porting across r-code versions sometimes requires recompiling. The r-code version always changes between major releases. It may or may not change between minor point releases depending on the added functionality.
If you port to:
· a lower or higher major release, you must recompile (i.e. moving from 8.3C to 9.1E or moving from 10.0B down to 9.1E)
· a higher point release within a major release, you do not need to recompile (i.e. moving from 8.3A to 8.3B or moving from 9.1B to 9.1E or moving from 10.0A to 10.0B)
· a lower point release within a major release, you may or may not need to recompile (i.e. moving from 8.3C to 8.3B or moving from 9.1E to 9.1D or moving from 10.0B to 10.0A)
However, it is highly recommended that you recompile after applying any Service Pack.
