Status: Verified
SYMPTOM(s):
Successive online backups become slower and slower
Online backup taking too long
Amount of data being backed up is more or less constant
Large number of _mprosrv process running
Database startup parameters can't be adjusted
FACT(s) (Environment):
All Supported Operating Systems
Progress/OpenEdge Product Family
CAUSE:
Not enough memory to handle the user load. For example, over time more and more remote users connect to the database. Depending on how -Ma etc. are configured, this results in more _mprosrv remote server processes running. Plus high -B values take up more space in memory. This eventually results in paging as the system tries to make up the memory shortfall, and so the decreased performance often associated with paging can appear. Depending on -n etc. it can be that a memory of, say, 1GB isn't enough.
FIX:
Add memory.
