V7 NLM releases - performance and integrity information
This kbase applies to customers using the PROGRESS Novell (aka NLM)
database server on Netware Novell servers with PROGRESS V7 as the
server.
PROGRESS releases 7.2Dxx had a reliability problem doing writes to the
database. Those problems can cause data to be lost or the database to
be corrupted in case of a Netware file server crash, have a power
disruption, someone just turns off the server without shutting it
down, and other similar situations.
PROGRESS version 7.3C addressed this reliability problem, causing a
performance hit. The actual performance impact depends on how much
reads versus writes the application executes, it can vary from 20% to
50% in performance degradation.
PROGRESS version 7.3C06 and latter writes to the database more
efficiently but in a way that guarantees that the data in flushed to
the disk at all times. It should show a performance equivalent or
better than 7.2D most of the times. Notice that although we expect
that performance will be as good as 7.2Dxx, we can't guarantee this
will be true all the times. Customers using 7.2Dxx should update to
7.3C08 (the latest NLM release) or risk database corruption on the
mentioned situations.
