FACT(s) (Environment):

UNIX
Progress 9.x

SYMPTOM(s):

Shared memory user connection fails.

You have attempted to connect to a database with too many users connected to it. Retry the connection later, or increase -n on the server. (5291)

All users connect through shared memory

Modified kernel parameters.

CAUSE:

Modification of the kernel parameters SHMMAX, SHMMIN, SHMMNI, SHMMEG, SENMET, SEMMNI, SEMMNS, and SEMMLS. and now can not connect all users. The SHMMAX was increased while SHMMIN, SHMMNI, SHMMEG, SENMET, SEMMNI, SEMMNS, and SEMMLS were decreased.

FIX:

Start with the kernel values set to the original values and adjust 1 kernel at a time for best performance.
