General Installation information
=================================

Here are several key points to remember about the Progress installation procedure.

1> All products reside on one tape or cd. Only one piece of media is
required for the installation. With the exception of EDOC which is
a separate piece of media.

2> Media is for a specific major release number/letter. There
have been reports of license addendums that contain more than one
version (7.3Axx and 7.3Cxx combined). See kbase 15520 for
assistance with these types of addendums.

3> All products must be installed in the same directory on a UNIX
machine. This creates ONE progress.cfg file. This file will
contain all the products that were licensed on that platform.

If Database, 4GL, and Query/Report licenses are installed in the
same path, then there are different startup parameters that allow
different types of access to the database.

-rg This is added to the startup script for 4GL Clients
-rr This is added to the startup script for Runtime Clients
-rq This is added to the startup script for Query/Report Clients

These startup options can be included in the client .pf file and
allow you to install all the products in the same configuration
and still maintain the behavior that each of these license types
provide.

4> If any products need to be added after the initial installation,
this is possible to do, but you need to follow these guidelines.

- IMPORTANT! BACK UP THE EXISTING PROGRESS.CFG FILE!
You need to do this because the installation utility adds the
additional product information to the existing progress.cfg file
at the beginning of the installation process. If the process
aborts for any reason, although the product exists in the
progress.cfg file, the files necessary to run this product may
not have been fully installed. The only way to resolve this
problem is to reinstall ALL products. If you took a backup of
the progress.cfg file, then you need only restore that file.
- Choose to install the new product in the existing dlc directory
for that version of PROGRESS.
- You will be prompted with three choices, to delete the existing
directory, to change the target directory, or to add to the
existing directory. Select the third option, add to the
existing directory.
- Choose to do a Quick Install.

5> The proupdt utility allows you to change the expiration date and
the user count. This utility does not allow the addition of
products.

6> The cpio and mount commands that is included in the Installation
Notes is only a guideline. The system administrator needs to
determine the correct device and/or mount command for the machine. If using a tape, you need to specify a correct rewind and
non-rewind device.

7> UNIX patch tapes are made with the "tar" command. UNIX commercial
release tapes are made with "cpio".

8> PROGRESS commercial version installations MUST be run from the
tape on a tape drive LOCAL to the machine. The installation will
not work if the files are copied to the disk and the installation
is attempted on the files residing on the disk. A workaround for
this situation would be to nfs mount the target filesystem onto the
machine where the tape drive is located. Make sure that the mount
point is *not* dlc. Once the installation is complete, the
filesystem can be unmounted. This workaround is applicable only if
both machines are binary compatible.

Ex. mount -f nfs machine1:/usr
fs/usr

This command would be typed on the second machine (where the tape
drive resides). This would mount the /usr filesystem from the
first machine onto the mount point
fs/usr on the second machine.

9> The PROGRESS showcfg utility decodes the information in the
progress.cfg file and displays the output to the screen. To use
this utility, you can do one of the following things.

- create a PROCFG environment variable
ex. PROCFG=$DLC/progress.cfg;export PROCFG

- specify the file name in the command
$ showcfg /usr/dlc/progress.cfg
