FACT(s) (Environment):

Progress 8.3E

FACT(s) (Environment):

HP-UX 11.0 64-bit

SYMPTOM(s):

Problem printing German umlaut characters.

At the printer umlaut characters are printed as a black square. This happens both from Unix and from the QAD application.

A text file can be created from Progress Procedure Editor containing the correct character value for the character. The file looks correct when viewed on unix with vi and when viewed on Windows with WordPad. When the file is printed on Windows to a printer the output is correct, but when it is printed to the same printer on Unix the output is a black square.

CAUSE:

This does not appear to be a Progress problem and seems to be related to printer/driver configuration and Application (QAD) setup. If the file was created with vi on Unix, it still does not print correctly, so Progress does not appear to be the cause of this problem.

FIX:

Set the correct printer driver from the Unix Administration lp interface and set the correct control sequence to be passed from QAD. The QAD application seems to be based on ibm437 or ibm850, so the correct control sequence for the printer codepage must be defined.
