Glossary of terms for internationalization
Character set - all the characters used to read and write a
specific language
Code page - a table of specific numeric values assigned to
each character of the character set. Code pages vary
by language, computer, and operating system.
For example:
Capital A with two dots (umlaut) has a value of 196 in the
ISO8859-1 code page. It has the value 142 in the IBM850
code page.
Collation - The way an alphabet is ordered.
Language family - One or more languages that use the same set
of code pages.
For example:
English, French and German belong to the same Western
European language family because they all use the IBM850
and ISO8859-1 code pages.
Hungarian, Romanian and Czech belong to the Eastern
European language family because they all use the IBM852,
ISO8859-2, and 1250.
