FACT(s) (Environment):
Windows NT
SYMPTOM(s):
ProControl
Event Viewer
The NT Event Viewer size has been increased
Registry error : Could not create the '' key for the Event Viewer. (5175)
Event Logger error : Could not post a '' event to the Event Viewer. (5180)
CAUSE:
The Registry Keys that control Progress logging to the NT Event Viewer have been deleted.
FIX:
Using ProControl to start and stop the databases on an NT system, Progress writes information to the database log and to the NT Event Viewer.
The NT Event Viewer has options to modify how big the log can grow and what it should do if it reaches the maximum size. If the log is not large enough to accept a reference sent by ProControl it may give the 5175 error.
(The default size for the Event Viewer log is 512K. If the user is running a database with a large amount of activity or several databases, this may not be sufficient).
If the registry keys necessary for Progress to control the logging to the NT Event Viewer have been deleted, check in the following location for the Identifier names entered when first configuring ProControl to govern the databases.
HKEY-LOCAL-MACHINE\SOFTWARE\PSC\PROSERVICES\(version)\Databases
If the identifier names are not listed, make sure the user is logged in as the Administrator or Domain Administrator and then consider trying to uninstall and reinstall Progress on the machine.
