FACT(s) (Environment):
Progress 9.1D
FACT(s) (Environment):
Windows NT 4.0
SYMPTOM(s):
Starting database returns 8872 error
Shared memory in use by a process other than PROGRESS. (8872)
Database had been shutdown normally.
Windows NT 4.0 SP5
Progress 9.1D SP3
No anti-virus scans the database files or the shared memory associated to Progress executables
No system monitoring tool, such as Big Brother, is running at the time of the database shutdown.
"truncate bi" and "prostrct repair" return same error 8872
"truncate bi" and "prostrct repair" do not write any message in the database log file
Problem occurs always on same databases (2 of 4 databases)
CAUSE:
As reboot of the machine is solving the problem, we could assume that it is some hardware weakness. However it is more probable that it is a software issue where an unknown process is "touching" the shared memory Progress is using for these databases.
FIX:
Reboot the server machine.
