New Version 8 ADE features include:
- SmartObjects.
Version 8.x features Progress SmartObjects, reusable application components that form the basis for the significant productivity benefits of this version. You can develop your own set of SmartObjects or you can customize the set that is included.
- Application Component Environment (ACE).
The ACE is a framework to use Progress 4GL and graphical tools to rapidly build SmartObjects, and assemble them into applications. Development is enhanced by the availability of wizards, cue cards, advisors, and help dialogs that prompt you through fabrication and assembly.
The ACE technology automatically generates message links between objects, as well as takes care of transaction processing and data management.
- Visual Basic Extensions (VBXs).
The Progress ADE now provides for integration of Visual Basic Extensions (VBXs) into MS-Windows applications. The ADE includes an OLE container, and offers a starter set of VBXs from the former Crescent Division (now Sax Software) that includes a spin button, enhanced combo box, and event timer.
Sax Software acquired the former Progress Crescent Products in February, 2001 and handles all technical support. Refer to the Sax Web site at:

- Team Development and Configuration Management.
Progress Enterprise ProVision, a new product offered with Version 8.x, adds team development and configuration management support to the Progress ADE with the incorporation of StarBase Corporation's Roundtable[tm] Total Software Management System[tm].
Version 8.x enhancements include:
- User Interface Builder (UIB):
The Progress UIB has been enhanced to fully support application development using SmartObjects. New APIs and extended features provide entry points to the UIB to add custom extensions, object-coding practices, and business processes.
- Report Builder:
The Progress Report Builder has enhanced the flexibility of accessing data (including outer joins).
- Translation Management and Internationalization Enhancements.
The Progress Translation Manager has been completely rewritten in Version 8.x to support global application development and deployment.
