The issue is noticeable when repeatedly execute prepared queries that have large numbers of columns.
Same code has no problems running against ORACLE
-Dsrv BINDING,0 does not help
Performance degradation is not seen against SQL Server 2000 with no SP
Performance degradation is not seen against SQL Server 2000 with SP1
Performance degradation is not seen against SQL Server 2000 with SP2

CAUSE:
The issue is specific to Microsoft SQL Server 2000 (all editions) SP3. Please refer to; http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;814410
814410 FIX - Performance Degradation and Memory Leak in the SQL Server ODBC Driver: The Microsoft ODBC Driver for SQL Server that is installed by SQL Server 2000 SP3 changes how SQL Server allocates column metadata for ODBC statements. In certain cases, the driver can cause a memory leak.
FIX:
Apply SQL Server 2000 Service Pack 3a. This will install the drvier 2000.81.9031.38 dated Mar 11, 2003
A supported fix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that is described in this article. Apply it only to computers that are experiencing this specific problem.
