Paragraph 14.7.4 from Database Administration Guide and Reference (Version 9) states:
Each database process (clients, remote client servers, and the broker) might use 15 or more file descriptors.
You must not forget as database process the APW's, BI, AI, watchdog, promon, proutil (index, idxcompact) and rfutil.
The number 15 is an average and it is based on a database which would have 10 extents (including schema area, data areas and before image). Should you have more database extents then you have to increase accordingly the number of file descriptors used by each process.
