GOAL:

Are the AppServer components of Progress 9.x the same as Progress 8.x?

FACT(s) (Environment):

Progress 8.x

FACT(s) (Environment):

Progress 9.x

FIX:

No, they are totally different.

Progress version 8 works totally differently to Progress version 9.

In Version 8 you would start the broker manually with a command line pointing directly to the broker executable itself.

In Version 9 you would configure the AppServer broker via the Progress Explorer tool available on Windows, which in turn connects to the Progress AdminServer process/service. The AdminServer updates a file called ubroker.properties and if you don't have the Progress Explorer tool available on Windows then you must edit the ubroker.properties file manually. You must be very careful though not to make mistakes if you manually edit the ubroker.properties file.

Once the AppServer has been configured you would start the AppServer via the Progress Explorer tool or via the 'asbman' command. The asbman command in turn sends your request to the AdminServer and the AdminServer will start the appropriate AppServer broker.

Due to this change in the way we do things, the file components available in Version 9 are also totally different.
