PROGRESS support for IBM SMP machines
DATE: 31-Oct-95
MODIFIED: 28-Mar-96
The PROGRESS 7.2E IBM port can *only* be expected to behave properly
on an IBM SMP box if only one cpu is enabled. If more than one cpu is
enabled and 7.2E is used you can expect undesirable results, including
database coruption.
PROGRESS 6.3F, 7.3A and 7.3C support IBM SMP by determining at startup
how many cpu's are available to use on the box. Once this is
determined the appropriate memory locking mechanism is used internally
by PROGRESS. IBM provided Progress detailed assistance in
implementing the ability to support single and smp cpu environments
with one port. It is not acceptable to use the single cpu locking
mechanism in a multi-cpu environment; database coruption will result.
Progress did not certify PROGRESS 7.2E in an IBM SMP environment.
We have confirmed problems would result by running PROGRESS 7.2E for
AIX on a SMP box. Server crashes and database coruption occurred
while running benchmark tests at Progress.
