SYMPTOM(s):

Queries are slower in webspeed 3.1D vs. 2.1 through firewall

FACT(s) (Environment):

Distributed configuration with the web server residing outside the firewall
The query runs as expected inside the firewall
A software based firewall running on an NT box.
The firewall name is Secure Computing Firewall for NT Version 2.1 which does not support any UDP port
After a new firewall (Watchguard Firebox II with software version 5.0.B823) is installed, the performance of the webspeed application came back as expected.
All Supported Operating Systems
WebSpeed 2.x
WebSpeed 3.x
OpenEdge 10.0x

CHANGE:

Upgraded the webspeed from 2.1 to 3.1D

CAUSE:

In this situation, the Secure Computing Firewall was the bottle neck as far as performance is concerned. WebSpeed 2.1 did not use any UDP ports. Therefore, it did not matter whether the firewall supports UDP ports. Also, the webspeed application runs as expected inside the firewall. This leads to the conclusion that this is in fact a firewall problem. Moreover, changing the firewall software that supports UDP solved the WebSpeed performance problem.

FIX:

Install Firewall that supports TCP and UDP ports.
