The Progress DataServer for Microsoft SQL Server

The Progress DataServer for Microsoft SQL Server provides connectivity to Microsoft SQL Server 7 and Microsoft SQL Server 2000 data sources from Progress 4GL and WebSpeed clients.

Through an ODBC Level 2 interface, The Progress DataServer allows application developers to access multiple database management systems transparently, and integrate these data sources across a variety of configurations.

Available in two editions, the Personal DataServer for SQL Server provides a cost-effective solution for customers who want to deploy a standalone, single-user application accessing a non-Progress database on Microsoft Windows 95/98.

The Enterprise DataServer for SQL Server provides the highest performance and most flexible connectivity. It provides all of the features of the Personal DataServer plus additional performance features, including stored procedures support, multi-user connectivity, and greater deployment flexibility. Support for diverse client and server platforms enables the Enterprise DataServer for SQL Server to provide efficient enterprise-wide network computing.

Benefits

1. Simplified application development and maintenance by allowing applications to be developed independent of the deployment database
2. Heterogeneous access support that lets a Microsoft SQL Server datasource participate as a full member in a multi-database transaction
3. ProToMSSQL Conversion Utility simplifies conversion of a Progress database schema into an SQL Server schema
4. ODBC block fetch
5. ANSI compliance of all internal SQL code
6. Optimistic locking on record updates
7. Asynchronous default database connections
8. Stored procedure support
9. Support for ODBC Dynamic Queries

Application Programming Interface: ODBC Level 2

The Progress ODBC DataServer

The Progress ODBC DataServer provides connectivity to a variety of certified ODBC-compliant data sources. It is also available in Personal and Enterprise Editions.

Both SQL server dataserver and ODBC data server products are ODBC applications but they run agaist different data sources. SQL server dataserver supports SQL server 7 and 2000, ODBC dataserver supports ODBC compliant databases such as Sybase, MS Access and Informix.
