SYMPTOM(s):

Cannot start database through ProControl

Invalid working directory (5273)

FACT(s) (Environment):

ProService is started with Administrator account
The working directory is not a mapped drive
Working directory is on the local machine
Permissions on Working Directory = Read, Write
No spaces in the path
The working directory is not a sub directory of the DLC directory
Complete install - no errors with install
Can proserve database from proenv session
HKLM\SOFTWARE\PSC\ProService lists the database in question
Full path to the database included
Default working directory is different to where database is stored
Sharing privelleges on directory = maximum allowed
Security includes SYSTEM account
Copying database to another directory starts database
Progress 8.x

CAUSE:

Comparing the permissions on the directory where the database DID start through ProControl to that directory where the database DID NOT start showed that the working directory did not have sufficient privileges

FIX:

The account that starts the ProService needs to be given read/write permissions. Ensure that "Reset permissions on all child objects and enable propagation of inheritable permissions" is checked.
