GOAL:

How does Progress recommend that customers implement security for applications?

FACT(s) (Environment):

All Supported Operating Systems
Progress 8.x
Progress 9.x
OpenEdge 10.x

FIX:

Progress does not recommend any specific security strategy.

There are a number of different strategies that can be implemented and to list a number of them:

1. Operating System security. Where you have users log into the operating system, and is provided an appropriate menu that runs an appropriately restricted application.

2. Application security. Where you have the application control security within the code itself. This is implemented by the developer.

3. Basic database security. Where you create users within the database and when users run the application they are presented with a login window.

4. Enhanced database security. Where you have the same as basic database security but you also implement security based upon each table and/or field.

If you need help in determining what is best for your application, please contact your local Progress sales representative who can then put you in contact with our Professional Services department.
