Yes, you need to convert the database to either BIG-5 (for traditional Chinese), GB2312 (for Simplified Chinese), or UTF-8 for a Unicode.
BIG-5 and GB2312 both contain the English character set and can therefore store English characters.
Unicode is the preferred method.
