GOAL:

When should a Mapped Drive be used to installed Progress on a Citrix Server.

GOAL:

Why should a Mapped Drive be used to installed Progress on a Citrix Server?

FACT(s) (Environment):

Windows
Progress 9.x
OpenEdge 10.x

FIX:

The preferred method for installing Progress on a multi tiered Citrix system is to install Progress locally on each Citrix Server for reliability and performance.

However, sometimes an administrator wants to reduce the number of Progress installations when there are multiple Citrix Servers by installing Progress on just one Citrix Server and then doing NetSetup on the additional Servers. If installation files are on a Mapped Drive performance may be degraded and intermittent errors can be introduced as well.

When Progress is installed certain environment settings are recorded or registered during the installation. Some of these environment items are the DLC directory and location of some files like the PROMSGS file.

When Progress is installed on a server the installation is usually on a local drive, ie. a "C" or "D" drive. An ini file is also created at this time, as well as registry information and path names for file locations are recorded.

When NetSetup is run the drive is usually a Mapped Drive and it will not match the local drive letter designation of the original local installation on the Citrix Server. That is when the problem starts for the Users with the NetSetup. Because the PROMSGS file is not at the NetSetup designated location of "Mapped-Drive-letter/DLC/PROMSGS", but the local "C" drive of the original Citrix Server and the client session must search to find it. If it is not found in time the client will get a PROMSGS error (22). Network activity has an effect on how long it takes to find the file and why the problem may not be seen all the time.

To avoid this problem the initial Citrix Server install must be to a mapped drive that the additional Citrix Server NetSetups will also use.

This method requires less maintenance for the administrator then individual Progress installations on each Citrix Server, but the later is the preferred Method by Progress.
