FACT(s) (Environment):

Windows 98
Progress 9.1D

SYMPTOM(s):

Can not establish connection from Windows 98 machine.

Could not connect to server for database <DATABASE>, errno <ERRNO>. (1432)

Windows XP clients plugged into same router can connect.

Telnet to the database port is successful

Clients could connect when they were using a machine to do DHCP.

Using port number for -S parameter

Services and host file have not be modified to resolve to names.

CAUSE:

Problem establishing connection to port number.
Although port names are not required in 9.lx, in this case the Windows 98 machine needed the port number to resolve to a port name to establish connection.

FIX:

Modify service file on Windows 98 machines to resolve to a port name.
