Unix OS Compatibility issues, symptoms and errors

How to determine whether the customer has purchased release media for
an incompatibile operating system version.

Compare the Market Watch OS release information with the system OS
release.

- Have the customer type "uname -a" at the Unix prompt
- Compare this output to the OS release information in Market Watch
by using the Media ID or SN. This number can also be found on
the media label.

If it is determined that the media is for an incompatible OS release
on the SAME platform, the customer needs to determine whether they
want to upgrade or downgrade either to Progress release or the OS
release.

If it is determined that the media is for a DIFFERENT platform, the
customer needs to contact either their AP/VAR or Sales Administration.

SYMPTOMS of incompatible media

1> Installation fails due to one of the following errors

- ./proinstall: syntax error at line 1
- _isroot: You must be logged in as root

2> Failure to start a broker session

- proserve dbname terminated due to signal 3 (SIGQUIT)

3> SYSTEM ERROR: Memory violation. (49)

UPGRADE POTENTIAL

If a customer needs to upgrade to the latest release of PROGRESS for
any reason (bug fix available in the latest release), make sure that
release is compatible with their OS release.

NOTE: Operating systems which are prone to incompatibility issues

OPSYS Media ID
Sun OS 102,62,120
Solaris 100,01,124
Unix SCO V.3 64,69,56,127
Unixware 05,83
Unix 386/486 V.4 05,83
Unix 386/486 V.3 32,39,88 (Interactive Unix)
DGUX 5.4R3xx 84,123 (Motorola 88K chip)
DGUX 5.4R411 84,123 (Motorola 88K chip)
DGUX 5.4R411 05,83 (Intel chip)

Note: There are separate PROGRESS products for the DGUX 5.4R411
for Intel and Motorola. A uname -a will tell you what the chip
type is, and that can be compared to the media id, See kbase
15559 for further information.
