GOAL:
What are inodes (in a file system)?
FACT(s) (Environment):
UNIX
FIX:
A lot of UNIX processing involves writing and reading to different sorts
of files. Files in a UNIX file system can be pointers against normal
data files or pointers against hardware such as hard drives, parallel
ports, networks cards etc. Inodes are used to describe what kind of file
it is, where the data is and what rights that apply. Directories
also have inode numbers to describe which rights apply and which files are in that catalog.
