GOAL:

How to enable large file support after a database is created?

GOAL:

When was large file support added for the Progress database?

FACT(s) (Environment):

All Supported Operating Systems
Progress 9.1C
Progress 9.1D
Progress 9.1E
OpenEdge 10.x

FIX:

Large file support was first released in Progress 9.1C.

As long as the operating system supports large files...
and
As long as the file system supports large files...

Then large file support can be activated for the Progress database after the database is created.

The database should be backed up just prior to activating in case any unexpected machine failures occur while the operation is taking place.
The database can not be running while large file support is being enabled.

No earlier Progress versions will work with a Progress database if large file support is enabled.

The syntax to enable large file support is

proutil <database name> -C EnableLargeFiles

After large file support is enabled, database, before image, after image and Transaction Log files may exceed 2 gigabyte and will grow till the operating system, file system or disk limits (whichever comes first).

All standard rules for areas and extents such as how to add or remove extents function the same for a database which has had large file support enabled.

Large File Support is only available in an installation which contains the Enterprise Database license.
