GOAL:
What version of the JRE is needed for Progress 9.1D on Windows?
FACT(s) (Environment):
Windows
Progress 9.1D
FIX:
The JRE needed for Progress 9.1D on a Windows platform is 1.3.0.
Further information is found in our Installation and Configuration Guide for Windows.
1.1.1 Java
Many Version 9 products require one or more installed Java components for
subsequent use by Progress. Specifically, the components are the Java Run-time
Environment (JRE) and the Java Development Kit (JDK).
The JDK contains the software and tools that developers need to compile, debug,
and run applets and applications written using the Java programming language.
The JDK software and documentation, typically included with each new release of
an operating system, are available for download at the vendor's Web site. You
will require a JDK if you intend to develop Java stored procedures and triggers
with the Database, or to create Java proxies with the Open Client Toolkit.
The JRE consists of the Java Virtual Machine, the Java Core Classes, and
supporting files. The JRE is the runtime part of the JDK and does not include a
compiler, a debugger, or development tools. You will need the JRE if you intend
to use one of the following:
Progress Explorer
SQL Explorer
WebSpeed Transaction Server
AppServer
Java application or applet
You will also need the JRE to execute Java stored procedures and triggers from
the Progress database.
Depending on which products you choose to install, the installation process
automatically updates your system with the JRE and the JDK, with the following
exceptions:
Open Client Toolkit
If you want to install the Open Client Toolkit to develop
ActiveX proxies, download and preinstall the non-self-extracting Microsoft
Software Development Kit (SDK) for Java Version 3.2 or later from the Microsoft
Web site at www.microsoft.com/java. Be sure to include all the prerequisites for
the SDK as specified on the Microsoft Web site.
NOTE: Before you run Progress, make sure the PATH environment variable contains
SDK-Java.32\bin.
For information on open client proxy generation and system requirements, see the
Progress Open Client Developer's Guide.
SQL-92
The installation program does not automatically install the JDK
component when you install the Enterprise Database, the Personal Database, or
the Workgroup Database with SQL Client Access. If you intend to develop Java
stored procedures and Java triggers for your database, you must install a
Progress development product such as ProVision. For information on writing Java
stored procedures and triggers, see the Progress SQL-92 Guide and Reference.
Table 1-1 lists operating systems and specifies the versions of JDK and JRE each
supports. In the case of the Open Client toolkit, other versions, including
versions from other vendors, can be used as well. When Javasoft provides a JDK
and JRE for a certain platform, Progress Software includes the JDK and JRE in
its distribution. For other systems, you must obtain the JDK from the system's
operating system vendor. Please contact your operating system vendor for
assistance in obtaining the JDK.

NOTE: Since Progress Version 9.1C, Java 2 incorporates the Japanese Supplement,
that is the Japanese Java Development Kit (JDK) and Just-in-Time (JIT) updates,
as part of the standard shipment. These updates allow f.or the support of Swing,
and also include Japanese localization of messages.
It is recommended to install SUN java 1.3.1_10 with Progress 9.1D + SP09
