Status: Verified
SYMPTOM(s):
Buffer stack overflow error when starting the database.
Error: buffer stack overflow
Database will not start.
Proutil -C truncate gives the same error
FACT(s) (Environment):
All Supported Operating Systems
Progress/OpenEdge Product Family
CAUSE:
Corruption in the before-image file.
FIX:
In the above situation the before image file of the current database is compromised. In order to have a safe recovery for the database, the database should be restored from a previous backup and whenever possible, the after image files should be rolled forward.
If the restoration of a backup is not a feasible option, the -F option is provided as a last resort emergency measure and should never be needed. This parameter is made available to allow you to extract and salvage as much data as possible from a database that is damaged and otherwise unusable. It should be used only when the alternative is loss of the entire database.
For further information on Forcing into the database, please refer to Solution ID P24330 Consequences of using the -F startup option
