Laptops with "power saver" or "auto-resume" get error 853

Running laptops with "power saver" or "auto-resume" can cause the
error (853) "The clock has gone backwards". These features can power
down a laptop without stopping Windows or MS-DOS and then power up
later (and continue running without rebooting). The Power Saver
feature in Windows reads the hardware clock frequently (typically
once a minute) in order to resync Windows' software clock in case
there has been a power shutdown. If it ever resyncs backwards, it
will generate the (853) error as the software clock indeed has been
set backwards.

Turn off the power management feature that has the "re-sync the clock"
feature. On the Zenith, it may be called POWER.EXE. On other laptops
it may be called QDM.exe. There may also be yet more names than this
on other models of laptops, but this gives you the idea of what's
going on and how to solve it.
