GOAL:
Does 100% disk usage by fixed extents affect performance?
FACT(s) (Environment):
All Supported Operating Systems
Progress/OpenEdge Product Family
FIX:
On many operating systems, when a disk is close to 100% full, allocating space for new files becomes inefficient because the available free space usually consists of many small fragments. Therefore, allocating space takes longer than it does on a disk with a lot of free space. That is not an issue if you use fixed size extents because then you are not allocating space for anything. But there is still the issue of throughput being higher on the outer track as opposed to the inner ones. Also, if you have more spindles, you will get higher performance because
there are more drives that can be accessed at the same time.
