GOAL:
What is the performance impact of after-imaging?
GOAL:
Will running ai degrade the performance of a database?
FACT(s) (Environment):
All Supported Operating Systems
Progress/OpenEdge Product Family
OpenEdge Category: Database
FIX:
It is difficult to make exact figures available on the performance impact of using ai, but although there is clearly some overhead involved, it is generally regarded as minimal. The ai files have to be on a separate disk from the db and bi files, and you should run an after-image writer as well. Note that an Enterprise licence is required to run an AIW.
There has been no evidence of after imaging being implicated in any major performance problems. If you are observing performance problems and suspect that ai may be involved, initial checking can be done using promon.
The bottom line is that running ai 1) shouldn't cause problems; 2) is a very good idea.
