This notebook entry deals with the "End of medium on input" error that
can be seen when attempting to read a DAT tape. This error suggests
that the tape is blank. This can be true in some cases, but we also
have seen this error when the DAT drive is not compatible with the
system hardware.

The new SCO DAT media was tested, and the following tape drives could
not read the tape.

HP Jet Store 2000 Model C1523E
HP Jet Store 2000 Model C1520E
HP Jet Store 5000

A successful install was done on the following tape drive.

Archive Model 4350XT

This is something to be aware of when you see customers experiencing
this error. This does not mean that these tape drive models are "bad"
or "good". It is merely another thing you can have the customer
check.

You should also ALWAYS ask the customer if they are able to read other
DAT tapes from the same drive on the same hardware.

*** PATCH INFORMATION ***

SCO has a patch for SCO UNIX 3.2.4.1 and 3.2.4.2 (ODT 3.0) that allows
reading and writing of variable length records. Apparently, the tapes
produced by our duplicator use variable length records.

To get, install, and use the patch:

1. ftp to ftp.sco.com
2. Log in as "anonymous" with your email address as the password.
3. cd to directory pub/SLS
4. type "bin" for binary transfer
5. get uod376c.Z
6. get uod376c.ltr.Z
7. uncompress uod376c.ltr.Z
8. uod376c.ltr is the procedure for installing and using the patch.

Once installed the procedure for using the drive is:

1. insert tape
2. type: tape -a 0 setblk /dev/rxxx (replace xxx with appropriate
device)
3. proceed as usual
